SSL VPN Beta - Testing the Web Interface
Getting started
Note: The web interface's connection process can take 3-5 minutes to complete. In locations where it's possible to use the client software , we recommend using the client instead.
To connect to the Aventail VPN web interface:
- Go to https://sslvpn.near.illinois.edu.
- Under the "Log in to" menu, select the network connection method you prefer:
- Off Campus Split Tunnel: Use this if you're working from a wired location and you don't need to send all your Internet traffic through the campus VPN, just the traffic that's intended for UIUCnet.
- Off Campus Tunnel All: Use this if you want to send all your Internet traffic through the campus VPN. (Select this option to use the Library's special resources.)
- On Campus Wireless Tunnel All: Use this if you're using a wireless network and want to secure your connection.
- InstallConnectClient: If you want to download and install the VPN client through the VPN web interface. (You can also download and install the VPN client without making a VPN web interface connection first; visit the Downloads directory.)
- Click Next.
- In the log in window, use:
User name: Your NetID
Password: Your NetID (Kerberos) password
(Note: Later in development, CITES may use the Active Directory password instead.)
Click Next.
- If this is your first time connecting:
- Internet Explorer users: Several ActiveX scripts that install Aventail components are blocked by IE's automatic security settings. Right click on the ActiveX bar (just below the URL bar) and allow each ActiveX item to run.
- Firefox and Safari users: You will receive several security and installation prompts, beginning with a prompt for the Aventail Access Manager. Accept these prompts, and wait for the Java system to finish initializing.
- Mac users: During the connection process, you may be prompted to accept a certificate. Choose the Trust option to continue.

- After you've installed the required components, a "Loading Agent" screen will appear with the rest of the interface partially visible behind it.
- Mac users: You may be prompted for an administrator password. Make sure to use your computer's administrator name and password in this window, not your NetID.

- Once the agent has fully loaded, look at the top right section of the screen. Below the Log Out button, look at the Access text.
- If the Access text indicates that you have full network access, you have successfully connected to the SSL VPN web interface.
- If the Access text indicates that you have only web access, you may want to restart your browser (or your computer) and try again.
- If you still can't get full network access, please contact us using one of the methods below.
- If the Access text indicates that you have full network access, you have successfully connected to the SSL VPN web interface.
Telling us what you've found
To report bugs or describe your experiences, send mail to: cites-vpn@listserv.illinois.edu.
To discuss the web interface with the CITES development team and other campus users, visit Testing issues and findings (Aventail web interface) on the CITES Wiki.
We may send email directly to people who have logged in to the Aventail system, asking them to rate their experiences.
Later on in the development process, we'll also make a survey available to Aventail VPN users.
